Last post in the troubleshooting series (for now): warping, where the corners or edges of a print curl upward off the bed while the center stays flat. It’s especially common on materials like ABS, but it can happen with any filament under the wrong conditions.
Why it happens
Plastic contracts slightly as it cools. On a large flat print, the outer edges cool faster than the layers underneath, and that uneven shrinkage pulls the corners upward. The bigger the temperature difference between the print and its surroundings, the worse the warping tends to be.

What actually stopped it for me
- Enclosure — even a simple draft shield (a box of cardboard or acrylic around the printer) kept ambient temperature more consistent and made the single biggest difference for warping-prone materials.
- Bed temperature — keeping the bed hot enough for the full print, not just the first few layers, kept the bottom layers from cooling and contracting too early.
- Brim — a wide brim adds extra material anchoring the outer edges down, directly resisting the upward pull as corners try to curl.
- Cooling fan settings — too much cooling on the outer walls of a large flat print made warping worse for me; I reduced fan speed specifically for prints with large flat bottoms.
The enclosure made a bigger difference than any single slicer setting. Reducing the temperature swing the print experiences matters more than fine-tuning any one variable.
Design choices that help too
Rounding sharp corners in the CAD model itself (see my CAD tutorial on fillets) spreads the contraction stress over a wider area instead of concentrating it at a single point, which measurably reduced warping on parts I redesigned this way.
If you don’t have an enclosure
A draft-free room and closing any nearby doors or windows during a print reduces the same kind of temperature swing an enclosure fixes, just less consistently.
Warping was the problem that took me the longest to actually solve rather than just work around, but tackling the heat difference directly — rather than only fighting it with more adhesion — is what finally fixed it.
