Part three of the troubleshooting series, and the failure that gives this whole hobby its most infamous nickname: the spaghetti print. This is what happens when a part detaches from the bed mid-print and the nozzle keeps extruding into thin air, piling up a tangled mess of plastic.
Why it actually happens
Spaghetti is nearly always a downstream symptom of a different failure, not a cause on its own. In my experience it’s almost always one of these:
- An adhesion failure that let the print pop off the bed partway through (see the previous post in this series).
- A collision — the nozzle catching on a warped corner or a piece of stringing and knocking the part loose.
- A layer that separated internally, tipping the print enough that later layers missed the part entirely.
How I catch it early now
The real fix isn’t stopping spaghetti after it starts — it’s not walking away from a print during the first 10–15 layers, which is when almost all of mine have happened. I stay in the room until the first layer or two is clearly solid and well-adhered.
Every spaghetti print I’ve had trace back to something that was visibly wrong in the first few layers, if I’d been watching.
Settings that reduced how often it happens
- A wider brim on tall or small-footprint prints gives a lot more margin before a bump knocks the part loose.
- Slower first layers reduce the chance of a bad first-layer bond that fails later under stress.
- Print monitoring — even a basic webcam pointed at the bed lets me catch a failure in progress instead of finding a bird’s nest three hours later.
If you catch it in progress
Stop the print immediately rather than letting it keep extruding — every extra minute is wasted filament and a bigger mess to clean off the nozzle and bed afterward.
Spaghetti prints stopped being a mystery for me once I started treating them as a symptom to investigate rather than just a failed print to restart. Nearly every one pointed back to an adhesion or collision problem I could actually fix.
