I’ll be honest: I bought my printer expecting to unbox it, load some filament, and start printing perfect parts within the hour. That is not what happened. It took roughly three weeks of failed prints, forum-reading, and small adjustments before I got a result I’d actually show someone. Here’s what that month looked like.

Week one: everything failed

My first print — a small calibration cube everyone recommends — came out with stringing between every surface and a warped bottom layer that had lifted off the bed halfway through. My second attempt did the exact same thing. So did my third.

The problem, it turned out, was a combination of three things I didn’t know to check: bed leveling that had drifted during shipping, a nozzle temperature ten degrees too low for the filament I was using, and a completely un-tuned retraction setting.

The biggest lesson of week one: a “bad print” is almost never one problem. It’s usually two or three small things stacking up.

The five settings that actually mattered

Once I stopped guessing and started changing one variable at a time, things improved fast. In order of impact, here’s what fixed the most:

  1. Bed leveling — a proper manual level (paper-thickness gap at all four corners plus center) fixed adhesion issues instantly.
  2. Nozzle temperature — raising it from 190°C to 205°C for PLA eliminated most of the stringing.
  3. Retraction distance — increasing retraction from 1mm to 4.5mm cleaned up the remaining strings almost completely.
  4. Print speed — slowing first-layer speed to 20mm/s made adhesion dramatically more reliable.
  5. Cooling fan timing — delaying the fan until layer two prevented the first-layer warping I kept seeing.

What week four looked like

By the end of the month I’d printed a working phone stand, a set of drawer organizers, and — finally — a calibration cube with clean edges and no visible stringing. It’s still not perfect, but it’s a printer I trust to start a print and walk away from, which felt impossible three weeks earlier.
